In spite of recent progress the Moldovan labor market is still characterized of some weaknesses such as lack of transparency about vacancies and in great need of development. The employment rate is below 50 percent and the agriculture sector employs around 40 percent of the total number of all occupied. The informal sector is extensive; roughly 25 percent of working Moldovans are employed abroad. Moldova seemed long to be unaffected by the ongoing international economic crisis, in January 2009 however the number of vacancies reported to the ANOFM were half compared to January 2008.
